CTIT Symposium 2008: “Creative IT”
“Creative IT”.
Be Creative with Information Technology
Wednesday June 11th, 2008
On June 11th, the CTIT organizes its annual symposium. This year’s theme is the role of ICT in creative industries and cultural practice. In many respects the Centre for Telematics and Information Technology is also a centre of CreaTivITy in which topics such as design, entertainment computing, and cultural heritage are being studied and where results of this research are put into practice. At this year’s symposium we would like to showcase some of our work in this field and put it in a national and world-wide context where Creative Industries and ICT research are starting to form good partnerships.
With a challenging and varied programme featuring renowned international and national speakers we hope to present a lively and inspiring programme for representatives from academia, industry, and cultural organisations. Amongst others there will be keynote presentations by Adrian Cheok (Mixed Reality Lab, National University of Singapore) and Surya Vanka (Microsoft Design Center). National speakers include Marleen Stikker (Waag Society), Berry Eggen (Technical University of Eindhoven), Willemijn Heeren and Franciska de Jong (University of Twente), Peter-Paul Verbeek (University of Twente) and Daan Nusman (re-lion). Besides talks, there will be demo’s and poster sessions.
Background. Increasingly, our cultural practices are becoming mediated through information technology. The way we consume cultural products these days is changing rapidly. We still watch television communally in front of an actual television when there is a live broadcast of interest, but most of the time we have digital recorders that allow us to pause and stop a program at will, or we have the opportunity to watch the program the day after on the internet – if we didn’t download it already the day before, that is. We meet in virtual reality or play internet games with competitors from all over the world. We have access to our cultural heritage from our living room. But current information and telematics technology not only allows us to consume cultural products in massively different ways. It also allows us to produce culture from that same living room or study. Instead of watching TV we can make our own movies and broadcast them through YouTube and earn our 15 minutes of fame. Entertainment and the Arts become increasingly digital. So what has the future in store? What are the current developments? How can ICT help to enrich our experience?
This CTIT symposium deals with different facets of cultural consumption and production: design, entertainment, and art. It gives insights into the challenges, applications, and perspectives emerging for ICT in this context.
