Cultural, Political and Religious Ideologies and the Appraisal of New Media

Description of research

Different appraisals of new media culture and its technologies have been made in our time, and these appraisals are based upon the ideologies or worldviews that people subscribe to. This project will perform a philosophical study of these appraisals, with the aim of assessing how they relate to different conceptions of good life and good society. It will proceed by (1) explicating the structure of ideology and the role of ideology in the appraisal of new media; and, (2) elaborating and analyzing appraisals of new media culture and its technologies given by different ideologies; finally, (3) to provide normative critiques of these appraisals. In this project, particular attention will be given to modern ideologies, e.g. consumerism, liberalism, post-modern ideologies, e.g. post-materialism, and pre-modern ideologies, e.g. various religious and non-western ideologies.
