Cross-organizational ERP Management: How to Create a Successful Business Case
Description of research
Current application of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) technology mostly takes place in a networked context, where business actors that are profit-and-loss responsible cooperate by using ERP software. The success of networked ERP implementations depends on adequate cost and benefit estimation. Traditional software cost estimation methods do not yield accurate results in this context because they rely on a predefined set of factors that only partially describe this context, and they let each of the network partners incorporate their own biases and intuition into the estimate. Determining all potential benefits from an ERP implementation is a challenging task. So far, researchers have proposed a variety of approaches to analyze possible types of benefits, but little research has been done on creating a complete benefit framework. We will try to close this gap. Another issue that we will address is the one of value distribution. So far, it is mostly unclear how value is distributed in such networks and how the distribution is agreed upon. In order to find an answer to these problems, we will develop guidelines to successfully set up a business case that includes cost estimation methods, a benefit identification framework and value distribution network.
