Project Summary
The GigaPort Next Generation Network consortium has defined an innovation project for the Dutch higher education and research network. The ambition of the GigaPort Next Generation Network project is to be among the small global leading group of research network projects. In order to realise this ambition two strategic goals are pursued in the project:
1. Innovation of the current network infrastructure to such extent that it remains in the global leading group of networks and is able to deliver IP Services and Lambda Services to its end users over a single transmission infrastructure;
2. Operation of the network infrastructure at reasonable cost for the SURFnet user community.
The GigaPort Next Generation Network project will start in 2004 and run until the end of 2007. For the project, a subsidy from the Bsik program is requested2. The network resulting from the project will be SURFnet6 and is scheduled to be in operation until the end of 2010.
Goal of UT/CTIT research:
The long term goal of the UT is to perform research on the management of hybrid IP/Optical networks, and the measurement of traffic flows within such networks. An example of a hybrid network is the new SURFnet6. The management functions within such networks should provide information on the performance of the network, and allow end users to dynamically establish and release optical connections. Since a requirement is to make operation of the hybrid network as simple as possible, connections should also be established and released by self-management functions within the network (“cloud bypassing”). To determine when it is worthwhile to establish / release such connections, the self-management functions have to analyze the traffic that is flowing through the network.
